Your first question may well be, "What is the cost of residing in an Assisted Living Home?" Facilities can vary widely in cost depending upon the location of the home, room size, levels of care licensed, services authorized and offered, among other factors. Unlike nursing homes, medicare does not pay for assisted living services. Some states do offer financial assistance, such as medicaid and/or ALTEC for some needy seniors or disabled individuals. Inquire at your local Medicaid or health services office for information on whether your state has a comparable plan.
However, this state's welfare assistance normally only covers about 60 percent of the actual cost of care. A well run facility may reject these assistance payments rather than lower their services or staff compensation levels in order to make ends meet with the reduced state payments.
Other sources of funding include long-term care insurance - a wise alternative to the more expensive and more institutionally oriented nursing home care. These private insurance plans will generally cover assisted living home care provided the facility is licensed for Level 3 Directed Care services by the State Department of Health Services. This facility can and does accept private long term care insurance. In short, this facility accepts only private insurance or private party payment for services. This allows us to maintain the highest levels of care without compromise.
High quality assisted living care costs vary from $75 to $125 per day, depending upon the level of care required. By comparison, Nursing Home care costs are roughly $180 to $300 per day. Overall, make sure you know what you are paying for. The standard monthly fee for assisted living should always cover room and board as well as all meals, snacks, laundry, and housekeeping services. Ask about which services and levels of care are provided in the standard monthly fee and what if any additional fees exist for services not covered under the standard plan.
